When applying for jobs, first impressions are key. Often times an initial phone screening is the first step to impressing hiring managers and subsequently, moving forward with the interview process.

To help job seekers improve their interview skills, a recent article from US News & World Report, “7 Tips to Ace a Phone Interview,” lays out a number of helpful tips to prepare for a phone interview.

Tip No. 7: Control your environment. Always arrange to be in a quiet, well-lit room, free from distractions. Sit in a chair with relevant materials in front of you. Give your sole, focused attention to your interviewer, and whenever possible make sure you are on a landline rather than shaky cell connection.”
