DeVry Prof Completes Fulbright Assignment in Netherlands

By Jodi Zanella
“The nature of the Fulbright Program is to change one mind at a time through meaningful one on one interactions that can influence progress.” Dr. David Luvison, Senior Professor at DeVry University and its Keller Graduate School of Management shared this thought upon his return from a Fulbright Specialist assignment at VU University in Amsterdam. During a three-week visit, Dr. Luvison worked with VU University to mentor, facilitate research and help develop curriculum on the subject of inter-organizational strategic alliances, an area he has been committed to researching and teaching and in which he has over 20 years of professional experience.

“Within academia, strategic alliances are a significant area that scholars research. Specifically, in the Netherlands there is a high concentration of scholars focused on this topic as a component of business strategy, which is critical to how organizations work in today’s world. I was honored to be able to participate and offer insights derived from my experience in the work force, the classroom and my research.” Dr. Luvison, who works at the Arlington campus in the D.C. area, was approved to be part of the Fulbright Specialist Roster in 2012, which placed him on a five-year register from which he was selected. The program awards grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions worldwide.

Insights were shared through multi-faceted interactions that included providing a presentation on alliance ecosystems to over thirty professionals and university partners. Additionally, Dr. Luvison had the opportunity to mentor a Ph.D. student who is studying organizational alliances by reviewing his research program, providing guidance and critiquing the work completed so far. Another unique experience offered was the ability to participate in interviews to hire new tenure-track professors for the oncoming school year.

Through the experience, Dr. Luvison had the opportunity to learn about VU University’s approach toward academia and take away thoughts on how to integrate more content from his field of study into student lessons. “This was a tremendous academic opportunity that enabled an exchange in teaching methods and philosophies. From a personal standpoint, it was invaluable to be able to spend an extended period of time in a different culture and get to know the people and pace of life.” Dr. Luvison continues to collaborate with VU University from the United States to help further their research and curriculum development efforts.
